The large deployment of law enforcement at dawn did not go unnoticed in the neighborhood. Around 6 a.m., this Wednesday, November 27, the national police intervened to evacuate a squat located at 35 rue Nantaise, near Place des Lices. The city requested the eviction of this building several weeks ago. A justice commissioner came to notify the occupants of this decision.
This old five-story building had been illegally occupied for several months. According to our information, six occupants were evicted. Around 9 a.m., agents from the city of Rennes were still present on site to install a secure door.
Drug trafficking near the squat
“It’s very good that they are closing the openings, I hope it will bring calm to the street,” confides a local trader. “Some marginal people had settled in at the beginning, they didn't cause any problems… but drug trafficking began to develop little by little.”
According to several local residents, drug trafficking was taking place near the squat. “People came to stock up on drugs in the middle of the day,” says another witness. Faced with these repeated nuisances, a petition was circulated to request the eviction of the building.
It was in this same street that a 25-year-old young man was seriously injured in the abdomen during the night of Monday to Tuesday, November 19. He had received a stab wound following an altercation, the details of which remain to be clarified.
