Geneva: Fire at Lignon: A woman trapped upstairs rescued

The fire started in a building located at 32, chemin du -de-Frères, in the heart of the Lignon district, in Vernier (GE), Tuesday, late in the morning. The origin of the disaster: a washing machine which burned in a laundry room. The fire did not cause any injuries. According to Captain Nicolas Millot, communications and public relations officer for the Fire and Rescue Service (SIS), the alert was given at 11:46 a.m. “When we arrived on site, we noticed a significant amount of smoke emanating from the ground floor and 1st floor of the building.”

He specifies that the firefighters had received information that a person was trapped on the first floor. “This made it possible to direct the right resources to the right place and to carry out its evacuation using an extension ladder.” This woman is safe and sound. Just like the two other occupants of the building who had evacuated the scene before help arrived. “The three people were taken care of by the ambulance crews on site, without requiring transport to the HUG,” continues Nicolas Millot.

The laundry room where the fire started is unusable and damage has been reported in the adjacent offices. “The intervention continued with clearing and excavation work to avoid any risk of the flames resuming,” specifies the communications officer. The fire was completely brought under control at 12:45 p.m., thanks to the use of a hose.”
