Key information
- The United States intends to deploy missile units from temporary bases in Japan's southern islands.
- A new Marine Corps unit will be stationed along the Ryukyu Islands with HIMARS rocket systems.
- Long-range firing units and a new intermediate-range land-based missile system called Typhoon will be deployed to the Philippines.
In the event of a conflict involving Taiwan, the United States intends to establish temporary bases in Japan's southern islands to house missile units. The Japanese newspaper Kyodo News indicated that this deployment would be part of a joint US-Japanese operational plan.
The plan calls for the deployment of a new Marine Corps unit specializing in island operations in the Western Pacific, known as the Marine Littoral Regiment. This unit will be equipped with HIMARS rocket systems and positioned along the Ryukyu Islands, also called Nansei Islands by Japan. The range includes Okinawa and extends south toward Taiwan.
The multifaceted strategy of the United States
The Kyodo report further states that the United States will also deploy long-range fire units of the Multi-Domain Task Force to the Philippines. Earlier this year, the United States demonstrated a new intermediate-range land-based missile system called Typhoon to the Philippines. This system is capable of launching nuclear-capable Tomahawk missiles.
Philippine Basics and Risks
Four new bases established in the Philippines under a military agreement signed last year are expected to play a role in responding to a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan.
This development reflects explicit US planning for future conflict with China over Taiwan, despite the significant risk of nuclear war. Crucial to these plans is strengthening military ties with countries like the Philippines and Japan.
