A 57-year-old man died following a possibly accidental fire in a home in the Saint-Michel district on Monday in Montreal.
The fire broke out around 2:15 p.m. in the basement of an apartment building on rue D’Iberville, near rue Legendre.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered the body of a man in the apartment. According to our information, the victim was lying on his bed. A smoking article could have caused the fire.
The man was quickly evacuated from his home, before being handed over to paramedics, who began resuscitation maneuvers.
The 50-year-old was then transported to hospital unconscious, where he was pronounced dead in the evening.

In all likelihood, it was an accidental fire.
The flames were quickly put down by firefighters dispatched to the scene. In total, around forty firefighters participated in the intervention.

Damage was limited to the apartment where the fire broke out.
According to our information, the accommodation was not equipped with a working smoke detector.
