In an escalation of tensions between Lebanon and Israel, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants announced that it had mandated Lebanon’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York to file a new formal complaint with the Security Council. This step comes in response to the continued and deliberate attacks carried out by Israel against the Lebanese army since the start of its aggression against Lebanon on October 8, 2023, attacks which have taken on an alarming scale in recent weeks.

The complaint, detailing serious attacks recorded between November 17 and 24, 2024, reports targeted strikes on military positions, vehicles and infrastructure of the Lebanese army in localities in the south of the country, notably in Marjayoun, Sarafand , and on the Bourj Al-Moulouk–Qlaïa road. These attacks resulted in the death of ten soldiers and the injury of thirty-five others, some seriously.

Violation of international law and obstruction of stabilization efforts

In its complaint, Lebanon called on the members of the Security Council to strongly condemn these repeated attacks, considered a flagrant violation of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and international resolutions, in particular Resolution 1701. The latter , adopted in 2006, constitutes the basis for the stabilization of the region and is based on the key role of the Lebanese army in cooperation with UNIFIL to ensure the sovereignty of the Lebanese State over its entire territory.

The statement also highlights that these attacks seriously undermine ongoing international efforts to achieve a ceasefire and harm mediation initiatives aimed at restoring stability. According to Lebanon, these Israeli actions reflect an explicit rejection of diplomatic initiatives and a desire to continue a military escalation to the detriment of the search for a peaceful solution.
