The resumption of a Belgian D2 match delayed due to an oversight by the referee

It’s a scene that will have surprised all the players on the field. This Sunday, during a match between Zulte Waregem and Seraing in Belgian D2 (5-1), the start of the second half was delayed by the referee… for an unusual hesitation.

Returning from the locker room and blowing the whistle for the match to resume, Laurent Willems experienced a moment of solitude. He hesitated for a few moments, forgetting that he had to kick off the second half. The locals, however, positioned themselves around the ball, and the Seraing players also came to sow even more doubt in his mind.

A goal a few seconds later

After confirmation by the captain of Seraing that his players had indeed initiated the commitment in the first period, the match was able to resume. Only 11 seconds after this rather astonishing kick-off, Jelle Vossen scored the third goal of this match.
