In the city center of Metz (), a stone’s throw from the cathedral, a building was the victim of a violent fire on Sunday November 17.

After the major intervention of firefighters which lasted several days to completely extinguish the fire, the time has come to observe the damage. And expert visited the site on Thursday, November 21, and submitted his pre-report, revealed in a municipal decree of November 22.

This pre-report describes structural issues linked to the fire in the building rue du Palais. These call into question its solidity.

Elements of the roof may fall

The solidity of the building on rue du Palais is called into question. Part of the elements still in place of the damaged roofing/framework may in its current state to fallin particular on the public domain and on the adjoining building rue Ambroise-Thomas, according to the municipal decree.

The fire destroyed a large part of the supporting structure of the roof, certain floors and the stairwell, potentially calling into question the structural stability of the building. The destruction of a large part of this roof no longer protects the building against bad weather and can further weaken the damaged interior structures. On the other hand, the fire could have damaged the stones in depth and weakened the mechanical resistance of the vaults at the level of the passages in the cellars of the building.

The access bans still in force also apply to apartments in second floor of the building rue Ambroise-Thomas. Those located on the first floor can be used and occupied again.

Security perimeters maintained

The municipal decree also announces the lifting of the security perimeter located rue au Blé.

On the other hand, the one installed on rue du Palais is maintained at a distance of 4 meters from the facades. In rue Ambroise-Thomas, the security perimeter is also maintained at a distance of 4 meters from the facades up to the wooden gate allowing access to the apartments.
