Paul Onuachu started for the first time this season in the Premier League. He did pretty well against the Reds.
Times are tough for Paul Onuachu at Southampton. The great Nigerian arrived from Genk for 18 million almost two years ago and has had a series of disappointments: relegation to the Championship, a (conclusive) loan to Turkey, a start to the season in minor mode.
Despite his 17 goals in Türkiye, Onuachu was left out of the core for his return to the Saints. But faced with the team’s catastrophic start to the season, which suffered one defeat after another, he was still recalled.
At the end of himself
Yesterday, the 30-year-old striker won his first start of the season against Liverpool. A poisoned chalice against Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté? We might have thought so, but he, like the team, made life difficult for the Reds.
Trailing after half an hour, the Saints reversed the situation to lead at the hour mark. Onuachu stood out in a nice number at the heart of the opposing defense, combining both his moving side and his technical palette with a blind pass to conclude. Not bad for a double meter.
Unfortunately for him, the lack of rhythm was felt: the former Golden Boot had to leave his partners injured after 52 minutes. Even crueler scenario for Southamptonwho ultimately lost 2-3.
