A great scare for travelers. More than 90 passengers and crew members of a Russian plane were evacuated Sunday evening after one of its engines caught fire upon landing in Antalya, southern Turkey, the Transport Ministry said.
Azimuth Airlines' Sukhoi Superjet-100 was landing at Antalya airport, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, when a fire broke out in its engine, it said in a statement.
An airport official told Anadolu Agency that it was the left engine, and that the fire was extinguished quickly.
“89 passengers and 6 crew members who were on board were evacuated safely at 9:43 p.m. (7:43 p.m. French time) and there were no injuries,” according to the ministry.
The plane was arriving from Sochi, a famous Russian resort on the Black Sea.
All landings at Antalya airport were suspended until 3 a.m. (1 a.m. French time) Monday, while departing planes were sent to the airport's military runway, the ministry said .
