: a Second World War bomb discovered in the city center, 3,500 people evacuated

A mine clearance operation is being organized this Sunday in (Haute-Savoie) after the discovery on October 22 of a bomb dating from the Second World War.

Some 3,500 residents were evacuated from their homes during the operation.

A mine clearance operation is being carried out this Sunday, November 24 in the city center of Annecy (Haute-Savoie) after the discovery last month of a bomb dating from the Second World War (new window). Buried for 80 years

It was on a construction site based on a former industrial site that the bomb was discovered on October 22. Since then, the 230 kilo shell has been secured, says The Dauphiné Libéré (new window)which specifies that this bomb was dropped on the city on May 10, 1944. It therefore took more than 80 years before realizing that it was buried in the heart of the city of 135,000 inhabitants.

Since 8:30 a.m. this Sunday, thousands of residents of the neighborhood have been taken care of by the city in reception centers. All circulation within a perimeter of 400 meters around the bomb is prohibited. Always according to The Dauphiné Libérésome recalcitrant Annecy residents did not wish to evacuate their homes, and will be fined 135 euros if they leave their homes before the end of the mine clearance operation, which began around 10 a.m.

On its website, the city of Annecy specifies that “the area is out of danger” since the intervention on October 22, but recommends not going to the town all day this Sunday. “Traffic is disrupted, travel is not recommended in Annecy”we can read there. Three of the main traffic routes are closed, while local and regional transport services are disrupted.
