one dead, four injured after hand grenade mishandled at party

A 25-year-old man died and four people were injured on Saturday in a grenade explosion during a party in a building in Knin (Croatia). An investigation has been opened.

Bad handling with tragic consequences. In Knin, southern Croatia, a man died and four people, including a minor, were seriously injured following a grenade explosion at a party in an apartment building, this said. Sunday November 24 the local police.

According to the first elements of the investigation, the man, aged 25, had taken out a hand grenade during the party which took place on the evening of Saturday, November 23, and had handed it to another person. But after a mishandling, the grenade was activated and caused it to explode.

An open investigation

The injured were hospitalized in Knin and their condition is stable, a hospital source told AFP. For the moment, an investigation has been opened to establish the circumstances of the acquisition and possession of the explosive device.

It must be said that since the beginning of 2024, the police of the Sibenik-Knin department, where the city of Knin is located, have counted 5,091 cases of voluntary surrender of weapons and explosive devices. The police thus collected 33 firearms, 4,986 various ammunition, 32 explosive devices and 18.4 kilos of explosives.

A scourge which pushed the authorities of this small town of 10,000 inhabitants, which was one of the main battlefields during the Croatian war of independence in the former Yugoslavia (1991-1995), to lead a campaign called “Fewer Guns, Fewer Tragedies”. The objective: to encourage citizens to hand over their illegal weapons and ammunition to the police.
