During the night from Saturday to Sunday, a gunman opened fire near the Israeli embassy in Amman, injuring three police officers before being neutralized by Jordanian security forces. The incident took place in the Rabiah district, where the diplomatic mission is located. According to witnesses cited by Reuters, police and ambulances rushed to the scene after gunshots were heard in the area. Security forces quickly cordoned off the area and established a security perimeter around the embassy.
A Jordanian security source, speaking to the Al-Arabiya channel, declared that “the situation is under control”, after the attacker was subdued by the police. The three police officers injured during the intervention were treated by the emergency services. The Israeli embassy in Amman has regularly been the scene of anti-Israeli protests. Last March, Jordanian riot police arrested dozens of demonstrators who tried to march towards the embassy. “No Zionist embassy on Jordanian soil,” the protesters chanted, a slogan that has become common during rallies calling on Jordan to abrogate its peace treaty with Israel.
If the Jordanian authorities authorize peaceful demonstrations in front of the embassy, they affirm that they cannot tolerate any attempt to storm diplomatic premises. Despite the peace agreement signed between the two countries in 1994, strong opposition to normalization persists among the Jordanian population. The Jordanian parliament, mainly composed of Islamists, maintains a hostile stance towards Israel, its members having repeatedly called for the cancellation of the peace treaty.
