: what future for the Halles de Merville fresco?

What future for the fresco of the Halles de Merville, in ? As part of the restructuring work on the structure, this work of art must be dismantled. This work by Jean-Claude Goualc'h was installed on the entrance wall of Les Halles in the 1980s.

“This fresco is a strong symbol of our history and our way of living in Lorient. As such, it deserves special attention. Its location, its curvature and its link with the architecture of Les Halles make it a unique element, inseparable from this place. Moving it would take away its meaning and its visual force,” said the opposition representative from the Lorient en commun group, Delphine Alexandre.

Other artistic projects

At the start of the municipal council, this Friday, November 22, she asked an oral question on the intentions of the municipal majority on the subject. The renovation work on the Halles requires redoing the insulation from the outside, hence the need to dismantle the work of art. “Doing it from the inside would result in a loss of surface area,” explains Sophie Palant-Le Hegarat, deputy mayor in charge of culture and heritage. We have no other technical possibility of keeping the fresco as it is. »

A regrettable solution for the opposition which reminds us that the fresco is an identity marker for the people of Lorient. The municipal majority is considering several possibilities. “The fresco could be digitized,” says the deputy mayor. Should art remain frozen and padlocked? We could also imagine a new work of art. But ensures that respect for the building in the shape of a flying saucer will be respected.

“We do not yet have all the technical elements to know how to dismantle the fresco,” says Mayor Fabrice Loher. If it has to be dismantled tile by tile, it could be very expensive. If we cannot maintain it and remount it on the facade, another artistic element will be needed on the Halles de Merville. »
