Indonesia: Cold lava flood alert in East Nusa Tenggara

The Geological Agency of Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has warned three villages in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara province, of the risk of cold lava flooding in rivers originating in the summit of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Jakarta, November 22 (VNA) – The Geological Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has warned three villages in East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province, of the risk of lava flooding cold in the rivers originating at the summit of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Agency director Muhammad Wafid said on November 20 that the agency's volcanology and disaster mitigation team had urged people not to carry out activities in the three villages and their surrounding areas in due to the risk of flooding.

Earlier today, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued a warning about potential cold lava flooding from Mount Lewotobo Laki-laki, following rainstorms on the island of Timor and the districts of East Flores, Manggarai, West Manggarai, Ngada and Sikka.

BMKG Director Dwikorita Karnawati called on regional governments and residents living near Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki to exercise caution and anticipate lava flooding by staying away from the banks of rivers flowing from the volcano very active.

According to the BMKG, the rainy season is expected to arrive in areas near Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in early December. This condition could increase the risk of cold lava floods sweeping down the mountain slopes. -VNA
