Microsoft has released optional update KB5046740 for Windows 11 (24H2 version). It introduces several new features and improvements. This update is not mandatory. It can be downloaded via Windows Update or directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog online service. Here is a summary of the new features and corrections made.
The taskbar is the target of several changes and fixes. The clock is now more compact. It no longer displays the year or AM/PM indications, saving visual space. The notification bell icon disappears when the mode Do not disturb is activated, but the notification center remains accessible by clicking on the date and time. Microsoft fixes an issue where the “Automatically hide taskbar” toggle did not work correctly as well as an issue with the search box display.
The Start Menu and File Explorer benefit from improvements. Right-clicking on pinned apps provides access to rich jump lists. The keyboard shortcut Maj+CTRL open things like Command Prompt directly in administrator mode. L’File Explorer benefits from added functionality Phone Link in the context menu to share files to Android phone. It is also the target of two fixes to correct a problem with the spacing of elements in the left panel corrected and a failure in the search box.
Settings and Task Manager
Microsoft has also worked around Settings. A new section allows you to customize touch gestures on the left and right edges of the touchscreens. A dedicated dummy page allows you to see dynamic lighting options, even if no compatible hardware is connected, while speech synthesis benefits from better reliability and options for manually updating language files.
Finally, the Task Manager is enriched with an extended dark mode. It is now available with logout dialogs. We also added the disk type in the tab Performances.
KB5046740 also proposes to strengthen the security of Windows search with the integration of IFilters in less privileged application containers (LPAC). The giant also fixes some issues affecting Task Manager, Mica, display, clipboard history, Windows Update and DIS.
