Former Spain international Juan Mata, known for his illustrious career in Soccer, has made a splash with his latest project by becoming co-owner of Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team San Diego FC. The announcement, made Wednesday, marks a historic moment as Mata becomes the first active international player to hold a share of ownership in an MLS franchise, joining the ranks of soccer luminaries such as David Beckham, co-owner of the Inter Miami CF.
Currently playing for Western Sydney Wanderers in the Australian Men’s A-League, Mata adds a new chapter to his prestigious career off the field. San Diego FC, which is scheduled to begin its first season next year, is under the ownership of Sir Mohamed Mansour, an Egyptian businessman, and also enjoys the support of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, a Native American tribe linked to El Cajon, California.
Mansour, who also owns Danish club FC Nordsjælland and the Right to Dream Academy — a renowned youth football academy with branches in Ghana, Egypt and Denmark — expressed excitement about Mata’s involvement. “We are absolutely delighted that Juan Mata has joined the club as a partner,” said Mansour. “His unwavering support for Right to Dream and our common goal of using football to bring about lasting social change are values we truly share. »
The 36-year-old midfielder is a well-known advocate for social initiatives, having launched the Common Goal movement in 2017, which encourages players to dedicate one percent of their income to social impact projects. This initiative partnered with Right to Dream, highlighting the intersection between football and community support.
In response to his new role, Mata said, “Joining San Diego FC as a partner provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to something special in a growing city and league. The Club’s dedication to community impact and a vision for lasting success resonates with my personal values. I look forward to bringing my experience and passion for the beautiful game to collaborate with all members of the club, inspiring our community both on and off the pitch. »
Mata’s playing career is impressive. He contributed to Spain’s victory at the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, not forgetting his success with Chelsea, where he lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy in 2012 and the FA Cup the same year. His journey continued at Manchester United, where he racked up titles including the FA Cup and Europa League.
San Diego FC General Manager Tom Penn noted the significance of Mata’s addition, saying, “Juan’s perspective and commitment to social impact aligns wonderfully with our mission at SDFC. As the epitome of excellence, he is not only a world champion, but also a force for good in football, fully resonating with our vision for the Club and the community. Welcoming him marks an exciting new chapter for us. »
Mata began his footballing odyssey at Real Madrid’s youth academy before moving on to professional football with Real Madrid Castilla. His move to Valencia CF in 2007 led to a Copa del Rey victory, with further success expected at Chelsea and Manchester United, and more recently, in Turkey with Galatasaray and in Japan with Vissel Kobe. He joined Western Sydney Wanderers in September this year.
Additionally, Mata is a strategic investor in Alpine Racing Ltd, a Formula 1 team backed by the Renault Group through Otro Capital, a private investment fund focused on investments in sports, media and entertainment.
