Adrien Rabiot signed for Olympique de Marseille to everyone's surprise in September. Trained at PSG, he logically alienated all the Parisian supporters. Mathieu Valbuena gave his opinion on the choice of the French midfielder before returning to his personal case.
In today's era, fewer and fewer players sign for Olympique de Marseille after playing for Paris Saint-Germain and vice versa. However, this is the choice that Adrien Rabiot made. Trained in the capital, the French international midfielder joined OM in September when he was free from any contract. Mathieu Valbuena, former player of the Marseille club between 2006 and 2014, spoke about Rabiot's debut with his new team: “I think Adrien Rabiot had personality. But it’s a good sporting deal for Olympique de Marseille.”he commented. Having passed through OM before joining OL, Valbuena felt for his part that it was impossible for him to sign for PSG in his career, regardless of the context.
Valbuena explains why he would not have signed for PSG
The former French international, aged 40, is clear on the rivalry between the two clubs: “I would never have wanted to go to Paris. Because, for me, Paris is really the rival. Whether sporty or extra sporty, there is everything. When I was at Lyon, even if I know that there was a sporting rivalry with OM, it was not a club that we hated. Afterwards, there were controversies from Aulas, there were a lot of things which meant that we no longer really liked this club in Marseille. But Paris has always been like that. We have always hated Paris Saint-Germain”he said for Free. In 2015, when he wore the OL jersey, his return to the Vélodrome did not go as planned. A puppet hanging in his likeness had been made in a Marseille stand. The supporters had not forgiven him for his betrayal. Valbuena doesn't seem to hold a grudge.
