Former British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, who was Tony Blair's right-hand man and contributed with him to the transformation of the Labor Party, has died at the age of 86, his family announced Thursday. “We are deeply saddened to inform you that our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John Prescott, passed away yesterday (Wednesday) at the age of 86”we can read in a press release. “Devastated”former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who held this position between 1997 and 2007, praised the memory of “one of the most talented people” that he may have encountered in politics.
The current head of government Keir Starmer paid tribute to him “true giant of the labor movement”and to one of “key architects” of the current government, formed in July after the legislative elections. According to his family, John Prescott, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, died in the retirement home where he resided, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Wales, this colorful elected official held the post of Deputy Prime Minister for ten years after the overwhelming victory of Labor, led by Tony Blair, in the 1997 legislative elections.
Former trade unionist, “John spent his life trying to improve the lives of others, fighting for social justice and protecting the environment”underlined his family in their press release. John Prescott was knighted in 2010, after having been an MP for almost 40 years. He stopped sitting in the House of Lords in July, shortly after Labour's election, because of his health problems.
