China’s electronic warfare capabilities will pose a “serious challenge” to the United States in the event of a potential war over Taiwan.

Judging from the report presented to the US Congress on the expansion of China’s electronic warfare capabilities, this will be a “serious challenge” for the United States in the event of a war in the Taiwan Strait.

What we know

The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC), which assesses risks in US-China relations, highlighted in its 2024 report that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has made significant advances in electronic warfare technologies to counter the US military.

China expects Washington to deploy unmanned ships, drones and modern aircraft equipped with sophisticated sensors and radars in a possible conflict in Taiwan, which would likely involve the United States.

To counter these capabilities, the Chinese military has developed electronic warfare systems capable of detecting, targeting, and disrupting U.S. technology designed to support the Taiwanese military.

This poses a significant challenge for the U.S. military, as disrupting the data communications that U.S. and allied forces need to operate could impact the course of the war.
