Toll prices are only increasing. The fact remains that, if this is usually a few euros, the increase was much worse in 2023. According to estimates from Roole (automobile club), the annual toll expenditure of the French is estimated at €186.42.
A major cost, therefore rising sharply. Because in 2022, it was “only” €178. In 2021, 2020 and 2019, the increase was even minor, almost painless. These three years, the prices were respectively 174, 173 and 172 €.
A result obtained by estimating the average price per kilometer per toll at €0.13. But also the total distance traveled annually on toll highways (98,400,000,000 km) and the annual number of vehicles using these roads (68,600,000). Per month, the budget drops to €15.53.
Sharp increase in toll prices in 2023
Remember that this is explained by a sharp increase in toll prices that occurred in 2023. The price then increased by no less than 4.75%! This compared to 2% in 2022. This necessarily affects prices. In 2024, this increase should be calmer, less than 3% on average according to the Public Service.
However, there is a simple solution to reduce the bill. This involves leaving the highway at different places, then re-entering it immediately and continuing your journey. Because motorway prices are not linear. Some pieces are more or less expensive than others. Breaking up your journey therefore allows you to reduce costs.
To find out how best to proceed, a site, autoroute-eco.fr, allows you to know which exits to take during a journey, to optimize the price reduction. It lists 510 toll plazas for 94,340 fares. The data is updated every year. And this can have a real effect on prices. The savings can go up to 30% on certain journeys.
