His name remains inseparable from the storm Xynthia where 29 people lost their lives in his town on the night of February 27 to 28, 2010. René Marratier, the former mayor of La Faute-sur-Merwhich has since become L'Aiguillon-La-Presqu'île after the merger with L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer, is dead. “I learned of the death of René Marratier, who served as mayor of the commune of La Faute-sur-Mer from 1989 to 2014. In these moments of mourning, I send my sincere condolences to his family and his close ones. May everyone find the comfort they need to get through this ordeal.” writes current mayor Laurent Huger.
In 2016, René Marratier was sentenced to two years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and endangering the lives of others and was banned from holding public office. Despite this, he retained support and had tried in vain to return to the forefront in the municipal elections of 2014 and 2010.
