FC – Is the arrival of Red Bull in Ligue 2 the entry of the wolf into the fold?

The more precocious and interesting the players are, the more the big clubs will snap them up. This law of football, which has become widely widespread since the Bosman ruling, has taken on another dimension among certain now important players in sport such as Red Bullwhich has already used questionable methods to be able to get ahead of competitors or not to compensate certain teams for Ligue 2 for the transfer of future internationals. While the international group is preparing to recover 15% of the shares of FC alongside the Arnault family which will become the majority shareholder, should we be worried about the repercussions this could have for our championships?

The Austrian group had notably been talked about badly when Ibrahima Konate (FC Sochaux at the time) had been approached by the RB Leipzig after having played only thirteen matches with the FCSM professionals… all without going through the leaders of the Lionceaux! Result: the player was convinced to leave free at the end of the contract, without compensation paid by the German club owned by the energy drink brand apart from the meager UEFA compensation.

Methods that made people cringe, even if Red Bull did not behave in this way for all its young recruits. However, we find a trademark in this purchase of players considered future greats in their positions by recruiters even before they have been able to play professionally with their training club for sums that we would find almost derisory today. This was the case of Dayot Upamecano () which, before playing its first match in Ligue 2, was sold for €2.2 million to Salzbourg. With a gigantic contract at stake which even made him ignore the Bayern representatives who came to physically meet him at the time (before signing there a few seasons later from Leipzig).

Finally, multi-ownership poses ethical problems and, even if it is anything but rare in modern football and French clubs are also in this situation (, Red Star, , Valenciennes, , , etc.) , bringing one more giant into the equation could potentially distort the PFC. The most fearful are wary and hope that Red Bull will not make the Parisian club a training platform for promising players in transit to its flagship club in Germany in particular. Asked about the real motivations of the red bull brand, the president of Paris FC Pierre Ferracci would like to reassure Parisian supporters and other training clubs in Ligue 2, Ligue 1 but also in Île-de-, whose rich breeding ground no longer needs to be demonstrated.

« They are first and foremost minority shareholders, and there to help the Arnault family build something excellent. Well, they also want to take advantage of the work they are going to do with us at Paris FC, to watch what is happening in the Paris region, and perhaps to benefit their club. But it won’t be dominant. Do you imagine the Arnault family, in a majority position, serving as a stepping stone? I’m in the jungle of Ligue 2, amateur football. We all struggle to find good players, and no one is exempt from criticism. There is sometimes very keen competition. I spend my time with my staff protecting young players who are approached by many foreign and French clubs. And sometimes, with methods that could also be criticized. Red Bull rather has an image of great professionalism. Afterwards, when they recruit and they want to find someone, they put the resources into it. »
