Ney Franco Takes the Reins of ABC Futebol Clube

Ney Franco is a unique discovery in Brazilian football. His decision to accept the coaching job at ABC was surprising. With an impressive CV, he has shown strong support for the youth categories, understanding them like the back of his hand. For two decades, Ney Franco has been part of the elite coaching ranks in Brazil, having won a Copa Sul-Americana with São Paulo in 2012 as well as the Carioca and Brazilian championships with Flamengo in 2006. He also won a Paraense championship and the Copa do Brasil with Coritiba in 2020, as well as the Pernambucano title in 2017 with Sport (PE). Notably, he led the Brazilian national under-20 team to a World Cup triumph. This list speaks for itself.

Ney Franco will have a short window of time to build a truly competitive team, characterized by an elegant style of play, defensive solidity and a hard-hitting attack. This news is the only bright spot for ABC in what has been a disastrous 2024. Given his esteemed career, Ney should probably demand higher quality players than those who have struggled this year. If he can avoid the unpredictable nature of soccer, Ney Franco could position ABC as one of the Serie C favorites.

Known for giving opportunities to talented players and unearthing future stars, Ney will certainly seek significant investment in youth development while closely monitoring the work being done at the Estádio Maria Lamas Farache.

The future president, whether Irapoã Nóbrega or Dudu Machado, must breathe vitality into all sectors of the club, because a good coach is only effective if ABC identifies talented players. In a refreshing move, Ney Franco surprised everyone by sending an open letter to ABC supporters and journalists — something I have never seen in my 36 years in the profession. A well-respected figure at 58, Ney Franco is the missing fuel in ABC’s engine, and he’s high octane.

Letter
Dear ABC Supporters and Members of the Press,
It is with immense enthusiasm and responsibility that I take on the role of coach of this giant of Brazilian football, ABC Futebol Clube. From the moment I was approached by management, I felt the weight of the history and tradition of this club, which has captivated generations for over a century and is part of the identity of the potiguar people.
I would like to express my deep gratitude to ABC management for believing in my work and trusting in my experience to lead the team into a new chapter in its history. The challenge of guiding a club as successful and respected as ABC motivates me to strive for the best results both on and off the field.
To the supporters, I can assure you that there will be no lack of effort and commitment. I am aware of the passion and strength that you demonstrate from the stands, and it is for you that we will work tirelessly. Together we aim to build a competitive team, characterized by courage, unity and a constant desire to honor the colors black and white.
To the press, I reiterate my commitment to maintaining an open and transparent dialogue. I recognize the vital role you play in sports coverage and communicating with fans, and I value this relationship because it strengthens our football.
I come to the ABC with the conviction that we are ready to face the challenges ahead. This marks a new phase in my career and, more importantly, a new chapter for the club. We will work with seriousness, organization and focus to honor the rich history of Mais Querido and achieve the goals we have all set for ourselves.
Let’s unite, because ABC’s strength lies in its unity. I am counting on you in the stands, in support, and singing together so that we can, with one momentum, achieve great achievements.
(Ney Franco)

Raphinha Disapproves of Fans’ Whistles at Brazil National Team: ‘We Played Well’

Futsal
The Apodi 3×3 Fortaleza match recently held in Mossoró, first match of the Futsal Brasil championship final, demonstrated that technique is not always the priority; Today’s matches are tough and physical. Apart from a superb half-volley goal from Ceará’s Rômulo – although I think the Apodi goalkeeper should have handled the situation better – the match was characterized by physical intensity and excessive marking.

Good news
Nota bene, the mobilization surrounding the match was commendable. In a month, the return match will take place in Ceará, where provocations aimed at destabilizing Apodi players are expected. The Pedro Ciarlini gymnasium is magnificent.

ABC
Both ABC presidential candidates promise to restore futsal, but I reiterate: for real participation, substantial investment is necessary. A budget of 10,000 or 15,000 is insufficient; the club will only face embarrassment if they fail to commit.

Rosemary
Alecrim must secure victories and rely on a series of favorable results to hope to climb to Serie A. I don’t understand how the most traditional district of Natal has not embraced the team that bears its name. Alecrim fades away.
