Is this a turning point in the war in Ukraine?
For the first time, the United States authorized the Ukrainian army to strike Russian territory with long-range missiles.
What will this American green light actually change?
Long-range American missiles. This is the type of weapon that Ukraine will soon be able to use more widely after the green light given by United States President Joe Biden. This late authorization raises several questions:
What is the objective? The Ukrainians will be able to target military bases in Russia, notably the strategic region of Kursk, thanks to their range, 300 km, and their great precision. The aim is to particularly target Russian planes capable of launching these missiles towards Ukraine. Example again, yesterday morning, in Odessa where a strike left at least ten dead.
Why now? Response from Joe Biden to a massive movement of troops allied to the Russians, 10,000 North Korean soldiers, who are converging in the direction of Kursk. Second reason, the Biden government fears the coming to power of Donald Trump, who threatens to reduce aid to Ukraine. “The uncertainties linked to Trump are certainly to the disadvantage of the Ukrainians, and I think that there is this desire to give the Ukrainians something to negotiate on territorial issues,” analysis in the TF1 8 p.m. video at the top of this article, Elisabeth Sheppard Sellam, specialist in defense and security policies.
Is it decisive? These long-range missiles are an additional strike force. Ukraine has already identified 200 targets to strike, marked by these red dots. But for all that, will the number of missiles provided by the Americans be sufficient? Experts agree that this will not change the course of the war.
