L’and One of the pitfalls of the French funeral system is the range of prices. Estimated on average in 2023 at more than 3,800 euros, whether for a burial or a cremation, the cost of the same services can vary from simple to quadruple. The two groups that dominate the market offer a segmentation of the offer, from low-end to luxury service. In the foreground, the General Funeral Homes (PFG), acquired by the Omnium management and financing company (OGF) in 1998, have the majority shareholder (74 %) the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Fund. Appeared in 1985, Roc Eclerc is the property of the Funecap group, established as a holding company. PFG and Funecap achieve 35 % of turnover generated by funeral activities and have key sectors, such as the manufacture of coffins.
Freelancers rely on these big two for services such as the use of management software. Funecap and OGF-PFG also manage two thirds of the crematoriums. This has been the case since 2021 with that of Père-Lachaise, whose prices have increased by around 20 % in the two years that followed.
The system does not guarantee territorial equality for the deceased when certain infrastructures are lacking: departments such as Haute-Loire, Lot or Lozère do not have a crematorium. The Guyanese must, for example, assume the additional cost of transporting the body to Martinique, nearly 1,500 kilometers away.
Aid exists to alleviate the economic burden of funerals. The Primary Health Insurance Fund (CPAM) today allocates a tax-free death benefit of 3,910 euros to beneficiaries who request it when the deceased was an employee in the three months preceding their death. The amount of aid may be greater if the recipient was a recipient of unemployment benefit, disability pension, pension in the event of a work accident or occupational illness with permanent physical incapacity, or even a medical practitioner, a craftsman or a (…)
