The only way children under 13 can send direct messages to other players is with parental approval.
In order to protect your children, Roblox has just rolled out new security features. Check out the details of these features here to learn more.
Safety features to protect children under 13
Roblox updates include: new restrictions on how users under 13 can communicate on the platform.
In fact, since November 18, users who have not yet reached this age will no longer have the right tosend private messages to players. However, there is always the exception to the rule, as they can still send messages within the context of games or experiences on Roblox.
Furthermore, it is possible to send private messages in the game with parental authorization. However, to be able to benefit from it, you will still have to wait some time, because the change will not yet be implemented on the platform before the first quarter of 2025.
Users under the age of 13 will also not be able to access the social dating experiences or even to free drawing or writing experiences.
Why a security feature change on Roblox?
Changes are needed within the platform after recent reports highlighting instances where Roblox is failing to protect children.
Moreover, a Bloomberg article describes how predators of the platform uses chat to communicate with children. In another report, Hindenburg Research talks about Roblox as “an X-rated pedophile hell”.
These new limitations on chat will be based on automatic chat filters of the platform intended to prevent users from sharing personal information.
Many other changes in progress
In addition to the changes applied to chat, Roblox is also rolling out its previously announced accounts for parents and guardians. This solution offers them remote management of elements like limits on a child's screen time.
If before, parents had to have physical access to the account of their child to set parental controls. The platform is also starting to use content tags to describe experiences instead of categorizing them by specific age groups.
Specifically, a moderate experience might include elements like crude humor or moderate fear.
Finally, users under 9 years old will no longer be able to access experiments with “minimal” or “light” content labels, unless a parent does not give permission.
How do you find these changes? Is this enough to improve security for younger users?
