Brigitte Challande, November 19, 2024. The cataclysmic situation in the north of the Gaza Strip, the continuity of attacks throughout the Strip, the arrival of winter in this disaster and the inability of the international community to react; there is a need for the story to persist and cand article by Abu Amir of November 18 urges us to do so.

“As the Israeli war against the Gaza Strip enters its 409th day, humanitarian suffering in the region continues to worsen with the continuation of intensive Israeli bombing of residential areas and infrastructure. According to reports from the Gaza government information office, the Israeli army has committed several bloody massacres in the past few hours targeting residential buildings in the Beit Lahia, Nuseirat and Al-Bureij areas. These strikes resulted in the death of 96 people, in addition to more than 15 missing and more than 60 injured, with varying degrees of severity.

Escalation of violence in Beit Lahia, Nuseirat and Al-Bureij

In details of these massacres, more than 72 people were killed in Beit Lahia alone, in one of the most violent attacks targeting defenseless civilians. In addition, massacres were carried out in the Nuseirat and Al-Bureij camps, where civilian homes were directly targeted, killing 24 people, including women and children. The Israeli army’s crimes have also intensified in the northern Gaza Strip, where summary executions and killings of civilians are being carried out as part of a campaign of forced displacement aimed at emptying the northern regions of their residents.

For 43 days of continuous aggression on the northern Gaza Strip, atrocities have been committed, including killings of civilians, forced evictions from their homes and the total destruction of their neighborhoods, constituting one of the largest displacements forced from modern history. Thousands of families have lost their homes and now live in displacement camps lacking the most basic living conditions.

Winter worsens suffering in displaced camps

With the onset of winter, the suffering of the displaced in the Gaza Strip has increased considerably. Heavy rain last night, accompanied by cold winds, exacerbated the harsh conditions. These difficult weather conditions have revealed the fragility of the tents in which tens of thousands of displaced families live. Many of these tents are dilapidated and lack sufficient insulation from rain or protection from strong winds, exposing the displaced to freezing cold and humidity.

Children in these camps are the worst affected, suffering from an acute lack of winter clothing and blankets to protect them from the cold. Women and the elderly, who suffer from low immunity and chronic diseases, face increased health risks with the continued deterioration of weather conditions. Dilapidated tents are flooded, becoming uninhabitable, threatening the lives of thousands of families without safe shelter to protect them from the harsh winter.

An urgent need for intervention

Displaced people in Gaza camps are calling on local and international authorities to urgently intervene to provide basic necessities to cope with the winter. It is imperative to repair damaged tents or replace them with temporary shelters guaranteeing a minimum of human dignity. There is also an urgent need to provide relief items, such as blankets, winter clothing and heaters, as well as to improve sanitation networks that have been flooded by the rains, raising fears of a health disaster.

The continuation of the Israeli aggression against Gaza, concomitant with the harsh winter conditions, portends an even greater humanitarian catastrophe, unless serious measures are taken by the international community to provide the necessary aid to civilians and put pressure on Israel to end its brutal aggression. Civilians in Gaza face not only the threat of bombing and death, but also the harsh winter, which deepens their suffering and reveals the world’s inability to end their tragedy. »

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, said the hospital remained under Israeli military siege, and added that media reports of medical aid arriving at the hospital were misleading. After weeks of waiting, ambulances were starved, medical teams were blocked and only 7 of 40 boxes of medical supplies were allowed in. So much so that the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, asked the bloc’s members for the EU to ” suspend its political dialogue with Israel ”, invoking its genocidal war in Gaza.
