“What is the interest of this government? »: the National Rally tempted by censorship

Michel Barnier, who will invite the group presidents in turn next week to Matignon, will receive Marine Le Pen for the first time since his appointment. But will this meeting with the Prime Minister be enough to prevent the National Rally from triggering censorship? “The censorship decision has not been made”, but “the government is taking the path”, in any case estimated Jordan Bardella, Monday evening on BFMTV.

“The French have daily concerns, security, immigration control, purchasing power, economic activity. If on these major issues the Prime Minister (…) is not capable of setting a course (…) then what is the interest of this government? », Also declared the president of the RN.

Marine Le Pen’s “favor”

It would be enough for the 126 Lepénist deputies to support a motion tabled by the left to bring down the Prime Minister. A scenario that still appeared baroque a few weeks ago. This summer, faced with a fragmented National Assembly without a majority, Emmanuel Macron ensured that Marine Le Pen and her followers would not a priori censor Michel Barnier, a favor she had agreed to.

The eagerness with which the new tenant of Matignon had dismissed his Minister of the Economy, Antoine Armand, who had excluded the National Rally from the “republican arc”, taking the trouble to call Marine Le Pen to assure her of his consideration , was particularly appreciated.

Marine Le Pen: “Those who are confident should not be so confident”

“Barnier is less irritating than his predecessors,” the executives of the flame party were still pleased at the beginning of October, detecting “respect” for them, one more step, according to them, towards the recognition of the ex- National front.

Since then, the debates during the examination of the budget have cooled the enthusiasm. “We were told: “We are going to build together” (…) I don’t know who (Michel Barnier) spoke with, but in any case not with me,” Marine Le Pen grumbled last week.

The “probable” recourse to 49.3 announced this weekend by Michel Barnier, which would allow the government to pass its version of the text without retaining amendments, including those of the RN yet voted on in the hemicycle, has all the more annoyed the far-right troops. “Are they going to reimpose their 6 billion taxes on electricity? Will they lower the fuel bill? That’s what interests me,” warned Marine Le Pen. Even if it means threatening: “Those who are confident should not be so confident”, noting in passing that “if Mr. Barnier thinks that he benefits from a positive advantage in the electorate of the National Rally, he commits a very serious error of interpretation.

According to an Ifop barometer for Ouest- published on Tuesday, 73% of RN voters “disapprove of the action of the Prime Minister”, the same proportion saying they are “opposed” to the Barnier budget project, according to a study by the same institute for South Radio.

Consequence: “There is a path that was made in my mind,” Marine Le Pen now swears, with Jordan Bardella refuting any link with the latter’s legal troubles in the trial of parliamentary assistants.

Jean-Philippe Tanguy for censorship before Christmas

Several of his relatives, led by MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy, are calling for censorship before Christmas. “Our reservations focused on our winning electorates, that is to say retirees and business leaders. However, they ask us to censor,” says an RN parliamentarian, brushing aside the reservations of his colleagues who are worried about a destabilization of the economy.

Remains a political risk. “We are not here to have fun,” recalls an RN deputy from the south, who does not wish to take responsibility for an institutional crisis. As the Assembly cannot be dissolved again before the summer, any censorship beforehand appears futile for many, even counterproductive. “Which other prime minister would it be? To do what different? », asks the one for whom “Barnier is the least worst”.

The hypothesis is nevertheless taken seriously in the government. Its spokesperson, Maud Bregeon, called on the socialists “not to be in a logic of automatic censorship”, which would “mathematically” allow the RN to no longer have the power to make and unmake kings.
