Ottawa – The Criminal Investigation Section of the Ottawa Police Service, East Division, has charged two men in connection with a hate-motivated attack on a light rail system (LRT) train near Tremblay station.
On Saturday November 16 around 6:40 p.m., the victim was on board the train when the two accused approached him and spoke to him. Without provocation, the two accused began attacking the victim while making denigrating and hateful comments about his race. Seeing that the victim did not respond to their comments, one of the accused then attacked the victim with a weapon.
As the defendants left the train, they continued to shout hateful messages into the ears of all passengers.
The victim, seriously injured, was taken to hospital.
Phillip HUDSON-BERRY, aged 35 and of Ottawa, was charged with the following offences:
- Aggravated assault
- Armed attack
- Carrying a weapon for a purpose dangerous to public peace
- Making threats
- Mischief – interference with the lawful use of property
- Cause a mess
- Mischief
Dillon GRAHAM-LAURENCE, aged 30 and from Ottawa, was charged with the following offenses:
- Assault
- Armed attack
- Mischief – interference with the lawful use of property
- Cause a mess
- Breach of conditions of probation order
The two accused appeared on Sunday for a justification hearing, then were returned to preventive detention.
