The war in Ukraine is entering a crucial phase with Washington authorizing kyiv to use long-range American missiles. By granting authorization, Joe Biden, the President of the United States, hopes to send a clear message to his successor Donald Trump as well as to Vladimir Putin.
While the war officially began three years ago between Russia and Ukraine, military historian Cédric Mas looks back at the implications of the decision of the President of the United States. “This decision will not change the course of things on the ground. Because the problems encountered today by the Ukrainian army are no longer only linked to the impossibility of striking deep into the bases in Russia (…) But they are also systemic problems, internal to the Ukrainian army. . More and more voices are calling for profound reform”explains the historian.
But the arrival of Donald Trump in power in the United States could change the situation. However, it remains very difficult to predict what could happen from now on regarding this war: “In this conflict, all predictions have been foiled. All we can say today is that the determination of the Ukrainians to support this struggle, which is vital from their point of view, has not weakened. On the other hand, they are faced with problems and perhaps these difficulties linked to a drop in American support will accelerate the reforms necessary for mobilization”.
