UAn Israeli strike targeted a densely populated neighborhood in central Beirut on Monday evening, for the third time in two days, a security source and state media said. At least four deaths have been recorded, reports the Lebanese government.
An AFP journalist heard two large explosions in the Zokak el-Blatt neighborhood, which is home to a large number of displaced people from Hezbollah strongholds shelled by Israel.
“The enemy aircraft targeted the surroundings of the husseiniyé (Shiite place of worship) Al-Zahraa,” reported the National Information Agency (ANI, official), with the security source specifying that the strike had targeted the overpopulated area of Zokak el-Blatt.
The Israeli army carried out its strike without prior warning, as it often does before its raids.
Ambulances, sirens blaring, were heading towards the neighborhood.
On Sunday, ten people were killed in two Israeli strikes on the heart of Beirut, one of which killed the media head of pro-Iranian Hezbollah, Mohammad Afif.
Israel launched a massive bombing campaign and ground offensive in Lebanon against pro-Iranian Hezbollah at the end of September.
Since the start of violence in October 2023, more than 3,500 people have been killed, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, most of them since the escalation at the end of September.
