What do trade union organizations think of free trade?
Without being hostile to free trade, the FNSEA-JA alliance denounces a “sieve Europe” which lets in agricultural products “not respecting the standards imposed on European farmers”, while demanding “means of production”, including increased water storage and access to pesticides banned in France but authorized elsewhere in Europe.
The Coordination rurale (CR, 2nd agricultural union) demands “a real rescue plan”, demanding to “extract agriculture from all free trade agreements”. She is calling for more massive cash flow aid, a “GNR capped at one euro including tax” and wants to see the State crack down on large cooperatives which “have developed internationally and outsource their results”.
On the side of the Peasant Confederation (3rd agricultural union), the central question remains that of “farmers’ income”. The union is calling for “guaranteed minimum prices” and support for structural reforms to support the agro-ecological transition.
