The decline was only short-lived. The benchmark sales price of natural gas (PRVG) for residential consumers, published each month by the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), starts to rise again in December.
If the price of the subscription has remained stable since July – it is €114.30 per year for cooking/hot water and €277 per year for heating – the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) is indeed increasing. For customers connected to the distribution network operated by GRDF (95% of residential customers), the average benchmark price including tax per kWh will be €0.14135 next month, for cooking/hot water use only and €0.11237 for heating use, i.e. respective increases of 2.2% and 2.8%.
Just a break in November
As a reminder, in November, this same average benchmark price including tax was €0.13839 and €0.10932 respectively. It was then down slightly, by 1%, compared to October. The consequence of a stabilization of prices on the wholesale markets – the natural gas stock market –, due in particular to moderate international demand.
Certainly, we remain below the prices per megawatt hour reached at the height of the energy crisis… All the same, while it has been falling since January 2024, the benchmark sales price of natural gas (PRVG) is generally on an upward trend. upward slope. The increase was particularly marked in July, due to a surge in prices at this period on the wholesale markets but also and above all by an increase in the price of natural gas distribution networks (ATRD) that all suppliers pay for their use of gas infrastructure (transport, storage, distribution).
This upward restart of the PRVG in December once again illustrates the current volatility of natural gas prices, particularly in a tense international context where the supply of this energy remains delicate.
A compass to compare gas offers
As a reminder, since regulated gas prices ended in June 2023, CRE has published its benchmark gas sales price every month. This PRVG is published for information purposes only, to allow individuals to compare supply offers on the market and is not a supply offer in itself. Suppliers are free to follow or not follow this benchmark price and to set their margin level. Please note, however, that out of the thirty gas offers currently offered to residential consumers, around ten are indexed to this PRVG which evolves like it, downwards or upwards. Their subscribers will then see their price per kWh increase in December.
In any case, it is important to compare these different offers via independent comparators such as that of What to Choose. But also to look in detail at the descriptive sheets of the offers, in particular the conditions for revising the prices provided for in the contracts. And, until December 31, UFC-Que Choisir offers, via its subsidiary SAS Que Choisir, a group purchase of gas with a fixed rate offer over 2 years. While this winning offer is already the most competitive on the market in November, it should allow, with the increase in the benchmark price in December, to achieve even greater savings. This offer is available on www.quechoisirensemble.fr.
