DayFR Euro

The Arlonaise Devahif in gold, three Dampicourtois in bronze

In 2012, the Habaysian Bethel Goelff and the Belgian-Luxembourger Maxine Libens-Thein each finished 15 seconds behind the winner of the day. Both had already stood on the podium a year ago, in the same place, to win the silver medal.

In school 2008, Malia Jacquemin, after having won gold three times consecutively (twice in cadets, once in 1st year school) this time had to be content with the bronze medal after taking things in hand at the start of the race , finishing respectively 25 and 8 seconds behind her usual rivals, Clémentine Byl and Pauline Detournay. But the citizen of Jamoigne, hampered by some recurring injuries this summer, has undoubtedly not yet recovered completely to fight on equal terms with the two athletes who preceded her.

No Euro for Herbiet and Grandjean

Still in the women’s category, we were impatiently waiting to see Chloé Herbiet back at work on a particularly challenging long cross. The Marchoise, after the stress fracture which prevented her from finishing the marathon at the Olympics, then prepared in the shadows and competed in her first important event since the Paris meeting. Title holder, this time she had to settle for 6th place at the end of a race dominated by Jana Van Lent ahead of Lisa Rooms, Victoria Warpy, Roxane Cleppe and Elise Vanderelst, the multiple Belgian 1,500m champion.

Rather well in the game during the first half of the race, the second best Belgian performer in half-marathon history, however, allowed the gap to widen afterwards. But isn’t that logical given that the Waco athlete will undoubtedly still need several weeks to regain the rhythm and stride which allowed him to finish in 10th place in the European Championship out of 10 000 m last June? As the first four were selected for the next Euro, the Famennoise will therefore not be able to wear the national colors in Antalya in a few days, she who took 9 place in this same European championship a year ago, in Brussels.

No Euro either for Lucie Grandjean. The Florenvilloise from AC BBS, lined up on the cross court, ranked 7th while the first two won a ticket to Antalya.

For a rather thin provincial delegation this Sunday, there was no other top 10 at the end of the effort, with the exception of the 5th place of Eva van der Werff, the young athlete from Soy affiliated with Spa, in cadets 2010. We will nevertheless highlight the 14th place of Grégoire Poncelet (ACD) in juniors and the 25th of his teammate Victor Bruwier in the same race.
