A truck carrying pigs fatally mows down two people on the highway in Catalonia

Black weekend on the Catalan roads. After fatal accidents in Calafell (Baix Penedès) and La Jonquera, this Saturday, November 16, two other people lost their lives this Sunday after being hit by a trailer transporting pigs, reported the Spanish daily The Case.

A fatal collision

The events took place early this Sunday, November 17 on Highway 7 towards the town of Vilablareix, near Girona (Catalonia, Spain). According to the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT), the two victims were traveling in a light vehicle before colliding with a truck, in circumstances which are under investigation.
Faced with the shock, the driver and his passenger stopped on the road to inspect their vehicle. That’s when a trailer carrying pigs violently hit them.

It was a little before seven o’clock when the 112 operators were informed of this terrible accident. Six patrols from the Mossos d’Esquadra, five fire teams from the Generalitat and the Emergency Medical System were dispatched to the scene. The two occupants of the small vehicle were found in cardiorespiratory arrest. The rescuers were unable to resuscitate them and were only able to note their deaths a few minutes after their intervention.

Nearly 120 deaths on Catalan roads

Since the start of the year, 118 people have lost their lives on the Catalan interurban road network. On Saturday, a woman died after being hit by a heavy goods vehicle on the Nationale 11. A motorcyclist also died after hitting a roundabout sign.
