the fire chief takes stock

The major fire which ravaged a house, located at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 120th Street, is now under control after the work of firefighters from the Saint-Georges Fire Department.

The director of the Saint-Georges fire brigade, Frédéric Morin, took stock on site, speaking to our journalist on the state of the situation.

« We received a call around 4:50 p.m. for a building fire on 120th Street. As soon as the call was received, flames were visible from all over the city, indicating a major fire had broken out. When we arrived, we noticed that a residential building was completely engulfed in a very violent fire. », Launched Frédéric Morin.

It should be noted that the firefighters reacted very quickly to prevent the spread to neighboring buildings, namely a storage building and the Tapis Venture factory.

« Opposite is the Tapis Venture factory, an old building containing dangerous products, and to the rear is a storage building. We immediately noticed the flames spreading to the rear building as well as the start of a fire on the roof of Tapis Venture. Our teams quickly took charge of the situation and these outbreaks were contained. “, he added.

Remote load shedding, causing a significant power outage in the surrounding streets, was also necessary to facilitate the work of the firefighters. Concerning the potential presence of anyone inside, Frédéric Morin remains cautious at the time of writing these lines.

« We cannot confirm the presence of people inside. When we arrived, the building was already completely on fire, a veritable fireball, making entry impossible. We therefore opted for a defensive attack to try to put down the flames. Information remains to be validated to determine if anyone was inside. We noticed a significant projection of debris, and witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion. We suspect the presence of propane or another flammable substance caused the fire “, he concluded.

Research is currently still underway to verify this information, both from the firefighters and the Sûreté du Québec.
