Talented Matildas winger Cortnee Vine has made a heartfelt decision to take a break from her football career, putting her mental health first after a meteoric rise to stardom.
For the second consecutive international window, the 26-year-old has decided not to feature, missing out on interim coach Tom Sermanni’s vast 36-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Taiwan.

Following the announcement of the call-up list, Vine released a statement through his management, emphasizing his commitment to prioritizing his well-being in the near future.
“I think many can relate that my life has undergone significant changes over the past two years,” Vine said. “With these new, sometimes intimidating experiences, I have realized that it is essential to recognize, manage and prioritize my mental health, which requires considerable effort on my part.”

“Like many navigating the mental health journey, I encounter days that are both comforting and challenging. Each day teaches me the importance of finding balance. For now, I need to focus on self-care, That’s why I’m taking this time off.”
A former A-League Women star, Vine rose to fame after being selected in the Matildas squad for the FIFA Women’s World Cup on home soil. Her national recognition reached its peak when she converted the decisive penalty in Australia’s thrilling quarter-final victory over France in Brisbane.
After the World Cup, she declined offers from overseas clubs to stay with Sydney FC, and has since become an iconic figure in the domestic competition as one of the few Matildas still active in Australia.

Eventually, after a brilliant season in the Women’s A-League, Vine was lured to the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States, signing with North Carolina Courage.
Despite playing a crucial role in qualifying the Matildas for the Paris Olympics, Vine withdrew from qualifying last February due to personal issues, before making her first Olympic appearance against Germany in Marseille .
Since arriving at North Carolina, she has appeared in five games, scoring one goal.
Although Vine did not give a specific timetable for her return, she expressed hope that this break will make her even stronger upon her return.

“I really want to appreciate everyone’s support and concern, and I have no doubt that I will come back better than ever,” she said.
Sermanni commented that he has remained in close contact with Vine, but respects his choice to step back from these upcoming matches.
“We talked before the last window and again over the past week. She’s doing well, but she’s just not available for these next few games,” Sermanni said.
