Lung cancer remains an urgent global challenge in the Middle East and Africa (LAA)

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, accounting for 2.21 million new cases and 1.8 million deaths each year. This scourge is not just limited to alarming statistics; it also causes considerable economic and social impacts, affecting not only patients but also their families and health systems.

In the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, the situation is particularly worrying. The lack of early detection and systematic approaches means that the majority of cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. This results in an unfavorable prognosis, with mortality rates reaching around 90%. These figures highlight the urgency of coordinated action to improve the detection and treatment of lung cancer.

The policy brief launched by the Middle East and Africa branch of the Lung Ambition Alliance (LAA) aims to improve access to early detection of lung cancer and increase survival rates in these regions. It provides a structured framework for implementing screening programs, drawing on local best practices and addressing health system challenges.

Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths globally, is often diagnosed late in the region, leading to high mortality rates. The note recommends prioritizing lung cancer at the national level, engaging various stakeholders (governments, civil society and patients) and conducting culturally appropriate awareness initiatives. It also highlights the importance of assessing the cost benefits of screening programs and using innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve these efforts.

The note recalls that oncology experts have expressed their commitment to combating lung cancer in Egypt and the region, calling for cross-sector collaboration to implement these recommendations and improve patient outcomes while reducing the burden. pressure on health systems.

It should be noted that the Lung Ambition Alliance Middle East and Africa is a global coalition, launched in September 2023, which brings together partners from various sectors in more than 50 countries. Its goal is to accelerate innovation and improve the situation of people with lung cancer.
