Sony has clearly done something unprecedented with its PlayStation 5: not only has it increased the price of the machine along the way (a first in the industry), but it is also selling its PS5 Pro at the highest price ever. no other PlayStation console. Fortunately, the price of the Slim Digital Edition version is falling… but not here. Not yet ?
A welcome price drop
Sony may have achieved very good scores, the firm is also increasingly struggling with the reputation of a premium brand with prices that are difficult to cash in on. After all, we are talking about a PlayStation Portal at 219.99 euros, a DualSense Edge controller at 239.99 euros and, of course, a PlayStation 5 Pro with certainly very solid performance, but sold at a price of 799, 99 euros. And again, that doesn’t even include the base and the Blu-Ray player, sold separately for 29.99 euros and 119.99 euros.
Even its base console has seen a price increase: the PS5 Standard Edition went from 499.99 euros to 449.99 euros and the Digital Edition from 399.99 euros to 449.99 euros, unheard of in history consoles. And yet, Sony is making a widely noticed commercial gesture: a price reduction of 70 dollars on the Digital Edition (without disc player, therefore), valid until December 24, 2024. Only problem: the offer has only been announced for the moment in the United States.
Soon the same in France?
With this promotion, the price of the PS5 Digital Edition then increases to $379.99, more than half as expensive as a PS5 Pro. There is no doubt that this should decide some to take out the credit card: all we have to do is hope for the same promotional gesture on the Old Continent. Last year at this same time, we were also entitled to a temporary price reduction.
The perfect opportunity to remind you that according to the latest news, there were 65 million PS5s sold, a little less than the PS4 at the same time in its life cycle : let’s not forget, however, that a huge shortage put obstacles in the way of the Japanese manufacturer for more than a year. Incidentally, very recently, Hiroki Totoki affirmed that “the price of the PS5 Pro had no negative impact on sales.” Like what.
