There were around 3,000 yesterday evening in the streets of Paris demonstrating: “Free Palestine”, “Israel get out of there, Palestine is not yours”, the demonstrators chanted. For fear of excesses, McDonald’s – one of which was targeted by demonstrators and a Carrefour store – had lowered their iron curtains with customers inside, AFP journalists noted.
After some tensions with the police around the station, the latter used tear gas grenades to repel virulent individuals, the protesters damaged a MacDonald restaurant and a Starbucks brand (9th arrondissement), located on Boulevard Montmartre.
Basically it was a gala of support for Israel which provoked the anger of these thousands of people who were in the street, a public meeting which had to be held in a secret location in the French capital this Wednesday evening and at the day before the France-Israel football match deemed to be very high risk.
The holding of “Israel is Forever”, organized by Franco-Israeli personalities, sparked an outcry on the left due to the participation of Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, known for his extremist positions.
“Smotrich assassin, Macron accomplice,” protesters chanted against him in the procession of 3,000 people, according to the police, which dispersed from Place de la République.
Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez, interviewed on RTL radio, did not ban this gala, considering that it did not present a “significant” risk of disturbance to public order.
