The awarding of the Ballon d’Or to Manchester City star Rodri Hernandez has caused heated controversy in Spain.
A controversy fueled by Real Madrid’s decision not to attend the gala and a number of conspiracy theories about why it wouldn’t be Vinicius Junior. This Ballon d’Or was poorly received by the majority of the international public, but Rodri didn’t help matters with his celebrations.
The Spanish star said he was not disappointed by the reaction in his home country, but was also asked about the footage which emerged later in the evening. Rodri and those celebrating with him were seen singing « Hello, Vinicius » to the tune of Bella Ciao, but he refused to give it too much importance.
Controversial celebrations
“People need to understand that it’s a healthy rivalry, it’s a private party. If we put a camera in each of our houses…I didn’t disrespect anyone, it’s just another rivalry. I have respect for Vinicius”, he told Cadena Cope.
He added that he would have voted for his Spanish teammate Dani Carvajal in second place and then for Vinicius in third place. The next time the two men come face to face, we will know if Vinicius attaches any importance to it on his side. The Brazilian was very disappointed not to have won the prize.
