On Tuesday morning, a cyclist was hit by a truck on the Audenaardsesteenweg, while he was driving towards Bambrugge.
The accident occurred around 11 a.m. The cyclist was rushed to ASZ Hospital in Aalst with serious injuries. Alderman Dries Hostens (CD&V) was present on the scene at the time of the incident. “I saw that a serious accident had just happened. The victim’s bicycle was stuck under the wheels of the truck. Fortunately, four people immediately came to help, including volunteer firefighters who stabilized the victim as much as possible until help arrived. I myself helped direct the traffic on the road, because the truck, which was coming from the E40 and wanted to turn towards Aalst, had stopped in the middle of the road, completely blocking traffic,” explains- it to our colleagues from Nieuwsblad.
When the ambulance and the Mobile Emergency Service (MUG) arrived, the cyclist received first aid on the spot for more than half an hour, before being transferred to hospital due to the severity of his injuries. This accident caused significant disruption on the Audenaardsesteenweg, a busy road.
Police have opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident, which appears to be due to the blind spot.
