Already more than 1,740 tornadoes in the United States in 2024. In comparison, the annual average is around 1,300 tornadoes. In 2011, an absolutely catastrophic year in terms of damage and victims, 2,250 tornadoes were recorded from January to December. Unsurprisingly, Texas is still the most tornadic state in the country in 2024, with 150 tornadoes recorded from January to early November, followed by Nebraska and Iowa.
All parameters were favorable for tornadoes in recent months
After several “deficit” years in mattermatter of tornadoes, what happened in 2024 to cause their number to explode again? It is hurricanes that have greatly aggravated the thunderstorm activity responsible for tornadoes. Hurricanes and tornadoes are two very different phenomena, but hurricanes can generate tornadoes. Hurricanes and tropical storms produce so much instability around them that they give rise to many thunderstormsthunderstorms violent and under these, sometimes tornadoes.
As stated Accuweatherthe hurricanes that hit the American coasts in 2024, Béryl, Debby, Helene and Milton, are responsible for at least 178 tornadoes.
Other factors then contributed to this increase in tornadoes: the position of the jet stream which often plunged south of the west of the country to rise north above the Great Plains, the heatheat of the Gulf of Mexico which brought humidity to the storms (a fuel), but also the gradual end of the phenomenon The ChildThe Child during the spring.
