The Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today issued the following statement on Remembrance Day:
“Today we pay tribute to Canadians who served and defended our country. We share their stories of incomparable bravery. We remember.
“For generations, Canadians have answered the call of duty. In the tunnels and trenches of Vimy. On the beaches of Dieppe and Normandy. In the mountains of Afghanistan. Canadian Armed Forces members and veterans have, throughout every chapter of our history, kept Canadians safe. They agreed to serve in times of war as well as in times of peace. They left their families behind for days, weeks, even months. They fought alongside our Allies, facing artillery fire, missiles and bombs. Some returned from the battlefield changed forever. Others never returned.
“Earlier this year, we commemorated 80 years since more than 14,000 Canadians stormed Juno Beach on D-Day. The tragic losses we suffered, the sacrifices our troops made and the The decisive victory won that day reminds us with emotion of the courage and dedication they demonstrated.
“Members of the Canadian Armed Forces continue to serve our country today. Let us think, among other things, of their interventions when forest fires and floods occur, as well as their participation in search and rescue operations in isolated places, in the training of our Ukrainian friends and in the protection of our country. and our continent. When our partners and allies see the maple leaf on a uniform, they see it as a legacy of courage that ensures the security and prosperity of the world. This legacy will live on – through epitaphs, historical and memorial monuments, stories of patriotism and through our remembrance.
“Every Remembrance Day, it is our responsibility to pay tribute to those who served our country. But it is also our duty – a way of recognizing that we will always be indebted to them. When families come together to worship in towns and cities, at cenotaphs and cemeteries, in ceremonies and on sacred grounds, we remember. When our children read “In Flanders Fields” or hear “Last Call” for the first time, we remember. When the country pauses at 11 a.m., and we proudly wear poppies on our hearts, we remember.
“On this Remembrance Day, and every day, let us honor veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Let us carry the light of memory into the future. Thanks to them, today we are free and live in peace.
“Let us never forget. »
