A call that is part of Donald Trump's recent promises to bring peace to the region. The Republican candidate had repeatedly affirmed that he could end the conflict “in one day”, without however revealing the terms of such an agreement.

The Ukrainian authorities, informed of this discussion, did not object to this exchange, although they are aware that Donald Trump could seek a diplomatic compromise with Moscow. Sources familiar with the matter say that Ukrainian officials even expected that Trump, in the aftermath of his victory, would seek to engage in dialogue with Putin with a view to finding a diplomatic outcome.

For the Kremlin, Trump's victory initially sparked a reserved reaction, with Dmitri Peskov, Putin's spokesperson, stressing that Moscow had no intention of congratulating a country considered “unfriendly which is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state.” But as of Thursday, Vladimir Putin publicly welcomed Trump's victory. He declared himself “ready” to discuss with the newly elected American president. In an interview with Russian television, Dimitri Peskov also suggested that relations between the two countries could experience a turning point under the new American presidency, describing these first exchanges as “positive” signs.
