The living legend of African football, George Weah, spoke at the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony.
“In 1995, I won the Golden Ball, being the first African to win it. I was very happy.
My country was emerging from war, and we used the Ballon d’Or as a springboard towards peace. It was the first Ballon d’Or for an African and we were very, very proud of it”declared George Weah.
On July 23, 1992, Georges Weah arrived at PSG. He joins PSG from AS Monaco.
He will spend 3 seasons there, playing 137 matches for 55 goals.
At the end of the 3 years, he signed for AC Milan during the 95-96 season. In his first season, the Liberian was crowned the Golden Ball. To date, he is the only African crowned.
At the end of his career, he entered politics and became president of Liberia from 2018 to 2024.
George Weah recently gave his opinion on the Ballon d’Or awards that Samuel Eto’o should have won during his career.
“I got the European Golden Ball and I know I deserved it. It’s true that Samuel Eto’o did not win the European Golden Ball.
In my opinion, this guy even deserved two European Golden Balls. What he has achieved in Europe far exceeds anything an African has achieved in Europe”confides Georges Weah in the columns of the media Indomitable Sport.
The AC Milan legend, who willingly places himself behind the son of Cameroon, sent a strong message to the new headliners of African football at the moment:
“Eto’o is in my opinion stronger than me. Georges Weah played to highlight Africa. Eto’o did it.
There are no rivalries between this or that. We all want to see Africans show the whole world the strength of our continent. I have been at the top, but my time has passed.”
