Cycling: tragic death of a very young 18-year-old cyclist, victim of a traffic accident

A tragedy affects Belgian Cycling this Saturday, November 9. The very young runner Miel Dekien, barely 18 years old, died in a traffic accident. According to the first known information, the young man was a passenger in a car and died in the accident. The tragedy occurred in Beerst, in West Flanders, as reported by our colleagues from Le Soir, a Belgian daily newspaper.

“It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Miel Dekien” writes the Belgian Cycling Federation on X. “Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, his loved ones and his team.”

Miel Dekien was a member of the Basso Team Flanders team, and performed on roads and on rough terrain (cyclo-cross). He notably obtained a good second place during the regional championships in his category.
