The Roubaix Swimming Pool
Until January 12, 2025
Like Giacometti and Brâncuși before him, Eugène Dodeigne is a man who walks. He is also a complete sculptor, creator of bronze and apostle of pure form. An artist who is moving forward and to whom La Piscine offers a second chance to mark History with a white stone… Born into a family of funeral marble workers, the late sculptor is now reborn from his ashes after having carved into the rock volcanic, in wood, plaster or limestone the foundations of this exemplary monograph. Rich in almost two hundred powerful and silent pieces, tiny terracottas and large rugged silhouettes, this monumental exhibition – the largest ever given in his honor – transports us into his dreams of slender bodies and exploded busts, drawing the contours of 'a work with the air of “broken faces” less monolithic than it seems.
His famous stones of eternity collide here with his little-known photographs. The organic, round and smooth shapes respond to an abrupt and angular figuration marked by the stigmata of the creative gesture which is reminiscent of the work of Georg Baselitz, while the apparent brutality of his sculptures gives way under the weight of grace and of the sensuality of his charcoal drawings.
