When you buy a used electric car, you may be afraid that the battery is of poor quality. Obviously, this is not the case.
A study published by MyBatteryHealth highlights the quality of batteries on the second-hand market. The least we can say is that the result is surprising.
A second-hand market that’s a hit
The second-hand market is currently booming In France. So much so that the year 2024 can go green. But what about segment electric cars?
Over the first nine months of the year, we total 36,384 electric cars second-hand sold. A drastic increase compared to to 2023 since this corresponds to + 57% over the same period.
However, on the entire second-hand market, electric cars represent only 2.4% of sales. Conversely, diesel is 47 % sales and gasoline to 42 %. But then why are customers hesitant about electric vehicles, even via the second-hand market where the price is lower?
This is explained by fearssuch as autonomy, ease of reload its battery as well as its state of health. A fear which is not really justified when we know that 87% of used electric cars have less than 5 ans. In fact, the vehicle’s state of health is still generally good.
Is the battery condition sufficient?
This is also the subject of the study signed by MyBatteryHealth. This is a French company which offers the possibility of quickly evaluating state of health batteries for electric and hybrid cars.
The study is thus based on a panel of 40,000 vehicles of all brands. Important clarification: the average mileage of the models was 88,000 kilometers. The study highlights the fact that 94% of the models evaluated had a battery in good condition.
The latter had an SOHi.e. the health status index, higher at 80%. Among the models observed, only 6% had this same index below 80%. Worse still, we note that 2 % of cars observed had a lower SOH at 75%. A problematic observation since from this threshold, autonomy is greatly affected. In addition, the battery may go into a state of overheated.
Be careful, it is not because this study shows that there is no specific fear to have that one does not have to be farsighted. This is why more and more manufacturers are offering an evaluation of state of health of the car.
Additionally, if you have an electric car or that you plan to buy athere are various actions to adopt in order to increase lifespan of a battery.
