Next Sunday will be the start of the tenth edition of the Vendée Globe. At 1:02 p.m. sharp, the skippers will leave from Les Sables-d’Olonne for the other side of the world.
The race is considered one of the most dangerous in the world since the skippers sail alone, without assistance and without stopovers, through several feared areas of the globe, such as the South Seas where conditions are extreme. It is for this reason in particular that the winner wins a great reward, just like the navigators who reach the end of the 45,000 kilometer course.
This edition brings together 40 skippers, a record, representing 11 different nationalities. Among the group, six women, including Violette Dorange, 23, the youngest participant.
Yannick Bestaven, winner in 2020-2021, Charlie Dalin, first to cross the finish line during the previous edition, and Clarisse Crémer who holds the women’s record (87d 2h 24min 25s) will also be present.
Like the previous edition in 2020, the winner of the 2024 Vendée Globe will receive a reward of 200,000 euros. The total prize pool for this edition is 800,000 euros, distributed among the skippers according to their final ranking. For example, the skipper who came second wins 140,000 euros, while the third place winner wins 100,000 euros.
